Butch Davis is headed to the Miami Hurricanes if a prediction by highly respected Sports Illustrated reporter Pete Thamel holds true.

In his latest for SI, Thamel examined college football’s open coaching jobs and made predictions for where the dominoes will fall.

Besides predicting Butch to the U, he says there’s “a sense that Miami has narrowed its field,” and he would be surprised if the guy wasn’t one of these four:

  • Butch Davis
  • Rob Chudzinski
  • Dan Mullen
  • Greg Schiano

All have ties to Miami except for the 43-year-old Mullen, who has turned around Mississippi State and could post consecutive 10-win seasons for the first time in school history if they beat Ole Miss tonight and win their bowl game.

It’s not exactly the sexiest foursome of coaches for Hurricanes fans, though flash shouldn’t matter in this coaching search. All that matters is that wins are in tow.

Thamel also predicted Jimbo Fisher to LSU.

Personally I’d prefer someone like Tom Herman at Miami. He’s an aggressive young coach not afraid to bully an opponent. Hatched from the coaching tree of Urban Meyer, he’s posting immediate results at Houston.

Davis could be a good fallback option, a candidate many consider one of the safest options and someone who can at least point the program in the right direction.

Could Butch lead the U back to greatness? It’s looking like he may get his chance.
