Although teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers, and likely the Miami Heat will be knocking on Hassan Whiteside‘s door on July 1, not all NBA pundits are sold on the polarizing seven-foot enigma.

“I’d rather have [Bismack] Biyambo than him,” NBA gambler Bob Voulgaris said on the Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz. “You guys watched Biyambo play in the playoffs. You can get Biyambo for a little bit less. He’s a better defensive player by a pretty decent margin in my opinion so I would go for Biyambo.

“He just seems like he’s a better overall player in terms of if you change your defensive concept on the fly in a series he’s just gonna pick it up more.”

Vulgaris made some interesting points during the interview, much of it centering around how Whiteside is often not what he appears to be as a defender, lacking in areas like boxing out, defending the pick and roll, and general basketball IQ.

While I may prefer Al Horford for the next 3-4 years than Whiteside, I can’t say the same for Biyambo. Hassan’s still growing as a player, offers immense potential and can fix some of his weaknesses with the right coaching and dedication.
